Tough Talk

James O'Donnell

Eastlawn ELD #043

CD release party at Aretha's Jazz Café on Thursday 11/21

On this recording James covers boogaloo, Detroit soul from Stevie Wonder, a funky Eddie Harris tune, a swing era blues-ballad, an Ellington classic, something associated with Louis Armstrong and a Latin tune by Claire Fischer. Everything he might do when you come to see him live in a Detroit club Like Fishbone’s or Brine Oyster House. He learned Eddie Harris “Mean Green’s” from a book that he got from Eddie when he met him on a cruise ship gig, a jazz festival at sea. “I Want a Little Girl” is a song that his mentor, Russell Green would always play at every performance. James wanted to include that in tribute to Russell who meant so very much to him. James has endeavored to put his stamp on each of these great pieces of music.
